One of the several effects/features of the SuONOIO that Scott is implementing is Distortion.

  1. This distortion is special, or at least uncommon in synthesizer use.

    In the stone age of digital audio, non-linear companding was used to get a slightly improved dynamic range out of 8-bit audio systems, for a more accurate representation of signals such as the human voice. They did this by giving more resolution to the “quiet” parts of the waveform. If you have used a telephone in the last 40 years, then you have heard this technique in action.

    I compressed the SONOIO sound samples used in the instrument using the “µlaw” scheme to cut down on some noise while fitting the audio data into 8 bits per sample. Naturally, I screwed up the encoding on some of the samples, and got some really nasty noise while testing. Alessandro and I decided to make this a patchable feature – you can now bypass the “proper” decoding stage per oscillator and have this distortion instead.

    Anyways, the character of the distortion seems to be a good fit with the samples. If you turn it up real loud and put your hands over your ears it almost feels like Turbosynth again.

    We will post more audio/video of the patchable modulations and effects as they are polished up.

  3. Josh…the only way to control the SuONOIO is with the knobs and its patch points, and it is a sound creating device exclusively (cannot be used as an external effect for instruments). It can be connected to other effects though, such as guitar pedals or guitar amps…anything with a 1/4 inch jack! Hope this helps, A
